My name’s Grant Sasser. I’ve been guiding for Telluride Angler for a little over three years now. The part that I like about fly fishing is just the elegance of the whole thing. Time out in the water and the time with friends is really peaceful. I really enjoy this stretch of the San Miguel River because, you know, we’ve got a lot of rock canyons, and big cliff walls and a lot of pretty scenery in this part of the world. Most of the fish that we see on the San Miguel River down low is going to be brown trout and rainbow trout. Up top, towards town, we see a lot of cutthroat and brook trout as well. We were very fortunate this June, to have a very large and prolific caddis hatch. So when we start seeing those bugs coming off, and we kind of see those clouds of caddis, you’ll see them. They come in, they drop kind of down on the water and they just barely touch the water. That’s when they’re dropping those pupas. So you get the opportunity to also throw a caddis dry fly as well as some caddis nips below it. My favorite thing about fishing on the San Miguel River is watching especially some of our younger anglers catch their first fish and seeing their smile on their face. I swear as soon as they’re off the water, they want to buy their first rod, and they want to get the whole get-up. A big thing that I find with a lot of my clients is they get so caught up in just the casting, and the landscape and everything. It kind of turns into…the fish is just the cherry on top. They’re so excited to be out here and learn to fish that if they catch a fish, it’s kind of just like a little extra, you know? They’re already so excited to be here, and kind of be on the water and get the experience. You know, they’re with me, we’re talking, we’re having a good time, we’re talking about life, we’re talking about whatever’s going on. Sometimes you just get in the groove with someone, and you’re having a good day and we forget that we’re even trying to fish. Nothing quite better on the water than a great day, with some great weather and great people. Now’s the perfect time to come out and fish. If you want to get on the water, shoot us a call. We’re happy to help you out.
