Get ready for Saturday Night Lights. Fort Lewis College football played under the new stadium lights for the first time over the weekend. Tailgating started two hours before kickoff with fans filling the stadium for the first home game of the season. You’re watching the Local News Network brought to you by Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers and Durango Gelato, Coffee & Tea. The roughly $750,000 project was paid for by a student fee increase that students voted on themselves. The ballot offered three funding levels. The students approved the highest one. The lights are phase one of three with new turf and a paved track next.
A few years ago, we put it up for a student fee increase proposal and it was passed by the several different stages. And so it’s something that the students wanted. It’s part of a three phase proposal. The first phase obviously being the lights. The next year after graduation, we’ll get a turf football field and a track, all weather track out here as well. And then phase three later down the road will be an indoor turf field house.
Over 2,000 fans packed the stadium to watch the Skyhawks take on Arizona Christian University.
It was electric, no pun intended, but I though it was a great atmosphere. Guys really were looking forward to it. And then it started at 6:00 so that the lights weren’t on then, but then I think kind of towards the end of the first quarter, the lights came on and we got a charge that way. And then it just created a great atmosphere.
FLC quarterback Jacob Morris threw two touchdown passes to lead the Skyhawks to a 27 to 9 win. There was so much energy in there. When we scored that first touchdown, everyone’s going crazy, got our momentum going. Just a great overall win for the whole team.
You can catch the next game with the Skyhawks facing off against New Mexico Highlands in another night under the lights, Saturday, September 12th at Ray Dennison Memorial Field. For more information, visit goskyhawks.com and for more stories like this, visit LNN.news.
